Bank of New Zealand Gets into the “Courage Zone”

BMK Lakshminarayanan is a Solutions Architect and DevOps Advocate at Bank of New Zealand. He shares a story of the Bank’s journey to DevOps. It all started with a deployment that should have taken two hours (and was started at 7 PM on a Friday evening), but which ran two and a half days, ending at 3 AM the following Monday. Although the release was a success, BMK knew there had to be a less painful way forward..

In the five years since their journey started, Bank of New Zealand has seen many successes with DevOps. The best, in BMK’s opinion, is that Ops has gone from “Who doesn’t do manual configurations for an automated deployment?” to “Who DOES manual configurations for an automated deployment?”

BMK now wants to bring people out of their “comfort zone” and into the new “courage zone” to learn about the new way of working. “It’s a never-ending journey,” he says, “because there is always improvement.”
