Jim Benson – Stop Using User Stories and Start Using Hypothesis at Agile 2015

Author of Personal Kanban Jim Benson has another radical idea: ditch user stories (“functional requirements in a fancy wrapper”) and return to using hypotheses to drive product development. Hypotheses need to be tested and validated and they require critical thinking. Developers will look at a hypothesis and use creative thinking to design a workable experiment. Whereas, as Jim says, developers faced with a user story will simply carry it out to the letter.

Jim also touches on the supposed flame war between Agile and Lean, Scrum and Kanban, saying, “The goal is to create good products. It’s not compliance with a framework.” Simply put, “Agile is ‘inspect and adapt’… [They are] all basically part of the same Agile family.”
